POV: Kass (post-BotW, pre-TotK)

“That’s stupid.” Kheel hisses. 

“Papa says stupid isn’t a nice word!” Cree hugs Kass’ leg like he might take flight. “Right, Papa?”

“Yeah!”  Genli rallies next to Cree, puffing up her feathers and raising her wings to make herself look bigger.

“Don’t posture at your sisters,” Kass says gently, running a wing over the top of Genli’s crown to soothe her. “How would you go about it differently, Kheel?”

Kheel flaps her wings once to hop onto the raised center platform of Warbler’s Nest. “We should sing from Revali’s Landing!” Notts and Kotts join her on the platform. They sing a few bars, twirling around each other. 

“And when we are done….we can push Link off the landing! Ha!” Kheel turns and pushes Notts off the side. Notts giggles and flops onto the grass.

“Pushing is not nice!” Cree cries. 

“Link can fly.” Kotts says.

Kass opens his beak to respond, but Genli beats him to it. “Only if he has the paraglider. Otherwise he’ll fall and die.” Genli flops over the top of Notts and sticks her tongue out. 

“We don’t assume Link has a paraglider, just like we don’t assume fledglings are ready to fly because their wings look strong. No pushing,” Kass says.  Suddenly, Teba’s shadow passes over them. It is the signal there is less than one minute until Link and Zelda’s arrival. 

“No time to change the plan. What song are we singing?”

“Master of the Wind!” Notts and Kotts say.

“Champion Revali’s song!” says Kheel. 

“No, the Song of the Hero!” Genli puffs her chest out and flaps her wings.

“Genli, don’t posture.”

“I thought we were doing the new one, Papa,” Cree whispers. 

“The Princess’s Lullaby!” Kheel, Notts, Kotts, and Genli shout together.

“Good, yes. Let’s hide! Quickly.” Kass hurries his daughters behind the Warbler’s Nest stones. Not ten seconds later, Link and Zelda appear over the hill. It has been six months since the Calamity was purged from Hyrule Castle. They spent some time in Kakariko while the Princess recovered, and then the wind carried them to the Zora; then the Gorons. The Rito received a message they were making their way to Tabantha next, the Princess eager to inspect all four Divine Beasts and meet the new pilots before settling in Hateno. 

Link leads Zelda down the hill. A strong breeze captures the length of her hair and blows it around her face affectionately.

Even the wind loves her. 

Link stops to help; their laughter warm and unencumbered. Link sets his hands on her face and the Princess freezes. Waits.

The wind stops; holding its breath. Kass realizes he is doing the same. 

Then Kheel shouts from beside him. “Just kiss her, stupid!”

“Stupid is a bad word!” Cree wails.

Link couldn’t help himself, Zelda just looked so cute when she was indignant, and booping her on the nose with his hands covered in flour was sure to get him an irritated “pfah!”

She rubbed the flour off her nose and stuck out her tongue. They both seemed to be feeling particularly impish today. 

Link turned his attention back to the small mountain of flour on the countertop, keeping a watchful eye on Zelda. He knew she’d be strategizing some form of revenge for the flour boop. He made a well in the centre, and cracked the eggs into the hollow, stirring in the flour gradually to make a smooth dough, then setting it aside to let it rest. Zelda watched curiously from her seat at the dining room table, where she was poring over some book he had picked up on his travels. 

“Wanna help me roll out the dough?” he asked nonchalantly.

“Only if I don’t get booped with flour again” she grinned, putting her bookmark in place and joining him at the counter. 

“I can make absolutely no promises on that front.” he laughed, handing her a rolling pin to begin laminating the pasta dough. 

He should have known better than to challenge her. It wasn’t until they had finished dinner and gotten ready for bed that he noticed a dusting of flour covering the back of his tunic.

(Now I’m craving homemade pasta. Welp.)

I'm pretty on board with the headcanon that what Link gets out of being the bearer of the Triforce of Courage is the power of being a video game protagonist, but I genuinely can't decide whether it would be funnier if he's 100% aware of how much bullshit his everything is, or if he honestly doesn't realise.

Link: No, that's fair, if I fuck up the timing I have to eat a laser to the chest and that is, understandably, extremely painful, so I don't recommend you practice this unless you're really confident about your timing.
